Samsung SCX 4200 on Gentoo

Hello!

I got a Samsung SCX 4200 printer, but ran into troubles when trying to make it work.
First of all, I'm experienced with Linux, but this is my first printer.
I got the drivers from Samsung webpage. The drivers work fine, the printer is recognized. But when trying to print something, [localhost:631] says
samsung (default printer) "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertosamsungspl failed".

Of course that file didn't exist. So I tried copying, softlinking and hardlinking from ../../lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsung* ., but it didn't help.

The strangest thing — when I was fiddling around with files, permissions, configurations and CUPS, I got it to print a few pages. And then *poof* all gone again.

Much troubled,
Elmo

Try the "splix" driver which is listed here on linuxprinting.org. Report here whether it works for you and which PPD file gives the best results.

I tried the splix driver, it still wouldn't print and CUPS would say the printer is not connected even though it is already connected. There wasn't any error messages either.

My experience is with Debian, not Gentoo. Still, I had problems very similar to yours when installing my scx-5530fn MFP. I downloaded and installed the Samsung driver they'd written for it from their website. Still no go! Only after getting some tips from the channel bot (irc.debian.org #debian) called 'dpkg' using "!cups setup" did I find I needed about half a dozen depencies installed properly first before Samsung's driver package interface and application would work. e.g. Install cupsys, cupsys-bsd, cupsomatic-ppd and foomatic-db.

Hit [localhost:631] and add a new printer. Enjoy!, and/or or you can try installing printconf

I am not sure if this helps but I just installed the same printer on my Mandriva2007 box and it worked after I reconfigured it to look at the right port. You may want to check out the thread I poste a couple of days ago called " Samsung Laser printer ML-2510 w/Mandriva 2007 ". I used the same fix and can now use the printer and scanner under xsane. Work well!

Cheers

Marc
