Someone who has the above all-in-one wanted to get it going in Linux. Trying to help them, I went to the Canon Australia site. At that site, I found links to two drivers for the machine, one for scanning and one for printing. Both were dated March 2007. I had a quick look at the scanning driver documentation, which said that the driver was for Fedora Core 6 and a version of Suse I can't now recall. I haven't had any opportunity to go further, but thought I should bring this to attention, in case it helps anyone.
Yep, I've got an MP160 here as well; roommate got it free with his new mac laptop. Our RAID server runs gentoo. Would be nice to know the scoop, I'd set it up as a print server if it'll work. Openprinting.org says it's a paperweight.
I'm delighted to see that the data for this all-in-one has just been changed to reflect the existence of the new Linux drivers from Canon to which I referred in my original post.
I want to add only one thing to that information--I was able to install the RPMs said to be for Fedora Core 6 on a computer running Fedora Core 3.
The printing function worked perfectly. I haven't yet been able to get the scanning function going. The copying function works without the need for any software.
I installed my MP160 on Linux Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06 with success by following the instructions in Home : Database : Printers : Canon : PIXMA MP160. The printer and scanner work great.
To scan, I cannot use XSane (the driver does not seem to be compatable). But it works with either Gimp, or directly with the provided Canon software: scangearmp (installed in /usr/local/bin/).
A small other info: for some programs installed by the driver in /usr/local/bin, it is necessary to have installed the package libxml1 (or else you get the message:
error while loading shared libraries: libxml.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory).
You can then use for example printuimp160 that allows maintenance operations (cleaning...).
I've just read the info about obtaining Linux drivers for the Canon MP160 printer..
Flix, you told about MULTPASS MPxxx..
Would you expand on that? I'm new to the world of Linux.. Yes, I'm attempting to use Ubuntu 7.+ Feisty Fawn .... Can't seem to get my hands on the driver/drivers you talked about..
What is gutenprint (upstream)?
yea umm im wondering if anyone has found like a link or something to a website for this.
PIXMA MP160 printer driver is what i need becuase i had lost my driver install cd so i just want to know if theres anywebsite that i can just go and download practically the cd in a way so i would be able to use my printer on Windows Xp gateway notebook.
I found the instructions for loading the drivers for MP160 here but I can't for the life of me figure out the 3rd step. Do I have to load the files into alien for it to work? I'm a newbie at this and I'd like my printer to work properly.
Yea same here i cant get the 2nd step.
Im running Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06LTS
and i am in DEEP SH*T with my parents because they cant print from our MP160
can anyone get a driver for me?
